Parts of Speech

Grammar is the way words all have meaning and a special place in a sentence. Each word in a sentence will be one of these word types, called parts of speech. One word may change to another type or another part of speech in another sentence. The part of speech a word has depends on what the word is doing in that sentence.
break is a verb in 'Break that pencil' but break is a noun in "Let's take a break now."
Grammar is making sentences, using the correct words in the correct order.

Parts of Speech List

  1. Verbs (Words that describe an action. 'Doing words')
  2. Nouns (Words that give a name to something Naming words)
  3. Adjectives (Words that add description to something describing words)
  4. Determiners ()
  5. Adverbs (Words that add meaning to an action Action words)
  6. pronouns (Words that show possessiveness and words that replace nouns)
  7. prepositions (Words describe 'where' and 'when' placement words)
  8. Conjunctions (Words that continue a sentence joining words)
  9. Interjections (Words that show emotional sounds exclaming words)

"Each part of speech explains not what the word is, but how the word is used." The same word can be a noun in one sentence and a verb or adjective in the next.

Sound Silence Decide what parts of speech these words can take. Give sentences to show these. Either make up your own sentences or listen and write the sentences. Discuss the meaning of the highlighted word and give the part of speech for that word, as used in the sentence.
affect, effect, polish, head, want, rose, hide, fit, mine, box, wind, lie, deal, might, rest, work, pants, left, last, spelt, lead, smart.
  1. The man who fell into an upholstery machine is fully recovered.
  2. He often broke into song, because he couldn't find the key.
  3. Every calendar's days are numbered.
  4. A boiled egg in the morning is hard to beat.
  5. When an actress saw her first strands of grey hair, she thought she’d dye.
