He, she, his, hers, theirs, they

They can be used to speak about a single person when we don't know or wish to mention their gender.
Their can refer to one person in order to avoid saying 'his or her'.

Example:

One of the new students would like to speak to you.
Great! Where are they from?
They could be from France. They speak French.
OK, Ask them where they come from.

Later..He is actually from Switzerland.
I see, well lets invite him into the office and ask him some more questions.
