Jeff Weaver knew it was going to be a tough meeting. A year ago he had been regarded (1) the company's rising star in the export department, signing contracts for massive orders from state-run companies in Lavania. It looked as (2) he had saved the company's fortunes. But all that was before the collapse of the Lavanian economy and the inevitable non-payment of most invoices.
The Managing Director, Derek Robinson, had decided to (3) an extraordinary meeting (4) look into the matter. Jeff was now about to (5) asked to give a detailed explanation of the disaster.

Mr Robinson coughed and tapped the table. 'Right then, everyone. Let's get (6) to business. I'm sure you're all aware of the reasons for this meeting. So without further preamble, I'll call on Mr Weaver who, I hope, will be able to put our minds (7) rest about this worrying state of affairs.'

Jeff stood up and decided to go on the attack. 'Thank you, Mr Robinson. First of all, I must admit that many mistakes have been made over the past twelve month - but not just by me! I think it's clear that I am (8) used as a shield to protect a number of more senior colleagues, who (9) have the courage to assume some responsibility for this mess. In particular my immediate superior, Georgina Bunyon, who has never seen eye (10) eye with me, and who is using this crisis (11) a way of (12) me removed from the company!'

Everyone turned to look at Georgina, who was (13) her fists and glaring pointedly at Jeff.
'No-one (14) have predicted the collapse of the Lavanian economy. However, to avoid further embarrassment, I have decided to resign.' And with this, Jeff marched out of the meeting.

Two months later, Jeff and Georgina were sitting looking at Lake Como from the terrace of a beautiful villa (15) they had just bought with part of what they called their 'Lavanian fund.'
'Any regrets, darling?' asked Georgina.

Only one,' said Jeff smiling. 'I (16) we'd taken twice as much!'
