paper 1 Reading: part 2 (gapped text)


About the exam: In paper 1 part 2 you will read a text from which are six or seven paragraphs have been removed and replaced in jumbled order after the text. You must decided from where in the text the paragraphs have been removed. Only one answer is correct in each case and there is one extra paragraph which does not fit in any of the gaps. You will have approximately 18 minutes to do this task.



Suggested procedure

1) Read the main part of the text through to get the general idea of the structure and the content. pay attention to the information and ideas before and after each gap. Highlight any linking or referencing words e.g. However, Consequently. This idea which will help you put the paragraphs in the right order.


2) Read the missing paragraphs and see if any of them obviously fit into the space in the main text.


3) Go through the main part of the text again. Stop at each gap and check each missing paragraph. Look for grammar and vocabulary links. If you are not sure about a particular gap, leave it and go on to the next one.


4) Go back and make sure that you have decided on one paragraph for each gap.


5) Check your ideas by reading the complete text in sequence. Make sure that your answers make sense.
