It's time

It's Time I left.

Had better is advising somebody to do something particular in the present or soon in the future. Eg:

  1. It's getting cold you'd better wear a pullover.
  2. It's going to rain you'd better take an umbrella.

We usually think of had as the past form of have but here had better forms a single phrase with a special meaning of advice.

It's time

It's time (for somebody) + to + infinitive.

  1. It's time for us to go home
  2. It's time to go home
  3. It's time for me to go home.(Not: It's time I to go home)
  4. It's time + (Somebody) + past form.
    • I've been here too long. It's time I left=I should have left already
    • It's time you children were in bed.=The children should already have gone to bed.
